The early mornings before school with the smell of the freshly made coffee and porridge; Christmas and all the food my mom and aunt made and getting together the whole family at my grandparents’ house for dinner…
When I left home, 18 years ago, I sat with my mother and asked her to tell me the recipes for all my favorite dishes, I wrote them in a notebook that has been with me since. My notebook has grown during these years, thanks to new friends, new family and the new life that I built here. Now I’m writing this blog to put together all those recipes, for me, for my children and for anybody that cherish old family memories, like I do, and want to build new ones along the kitchen cabinets and the stove.
I hope you enjoy the journey… I’m certainly doing it.
Christie at Cookiemomma’s blog wrote on Monday this “You are supposed to be able to stand a broom up on its bristles twice a year, during the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes. It has something to do with the alignment of the sun and planets. Not quite sure of the specifics, but I do think this is pretty cool. I saw so many pics on Facebook of brooms either standing or laying on the floor and I just couldn’t help but try. The actual Spring equinox is scheduled for March 20th of this year, so y’all still have time to try. Let me know how it goes!!!
Now at what time of the year will the broom sweep on its own? That’s the bigger question”.
I couldn’t resist myself and made the experiment (with a broom and an egg) and it worked!!
Here’s my proof.
Amazing 🙂
This is so beautiful what you shared with us. I have never thought this before, I mean memories are attached to food. How true… But you are special for this, your passionate of cooking makes special. I loved your blog, and I have just visited, I hope I can read in English all of them. Thank you for visiting my blog too. And thank you for sharing your memories with these delicious food and recipes, Blessing and Happiness, with my love, nia
Thanks for your kind comment Nia!! Not every meal I cook is special or has a story behind (is impossible!) But many of them means a lot to me, if only because I’m sharing them with you all. Thanks for coming and keep doing it. There’s more to come 😉
Thank you for stopping by. I’m really glad to know you because I just started to learn Spanish. My job is an architecture engineer. So I would like to see Spanish architecture like Gaudi.
Of course your posts are full of fun. I’ll enjoy them.
Thanks! The 7 links post is on his way… 😉 Vuelve pronto por aquí
Our food is our history indeed! Lovely that you come from a family that appreciated it AND made it delicious. I am going to look forward to “eating” my way through your wonderful blog!
Thank you very much for your comment Kathryningrid! Family is very important and what’s better than to gather all together around a beautiful and delicious meal? 😉 I hope you enjoy the food and stories on my blog, please keep visiting!
Yes, I’ll certainly keep visiting you here!
The other thing I love about cooking and food is that sharing a meal can also turn friends into family! Those occasional lunches with my friends or having a group over for dinner–that’s great bonding time as well as physical sustenance. What a gift food is.
I took two years of spanish in high school, but still only speak a little…not enough for a decent conversation, though. I’ve been to Madrid twice on business and I love the country! The food is excellent and I especially enjoyed the tapas. We don’t have much variety for tapas where I live and I often think of the delicious food I had in Spain. I’ll be visiting your blog more. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Fergiemoto! Thanks for stopping by. I’m sure you have it somewhere (Spanish, I mean), the recipes here are both in English and Spanish, so it is a good way to practice 😉
I just bought the other day a book with tapas recipes. I haven’t cooked any yet, but it is on my to do list. It is true that the food here at Spain is very good is part of its idiosyncrasy: always enjoy a good meal, a good wine or a good beer with some tapas…
Hola! I just discovered you blog from Chica Andaluza and I must say I love it! I love all the recipes from Panama– I’ll have to try some soon. I also live in Madrid! Have a wonderful holiday!!!
Hola Lauren!
Thanks for your comment. Sorry it took me so long to answer; it’s been crazy at home. I’m very happy you’ve liked my blog and the recipes from Panama 🙂 I went to your site and it is really good, I liked it a lot; with all those wonderful recipes and ideas.
Thanks again. Merry Christmas!

Hi! Thanks a lot for your comment. I’m glad you liked my blog and decided to stick around 🙂 I’m going to take a look right now at your blog.
Have a nice weekend
Thank you for following my blog. You became my 100th WordPress follower, so another thank you 🙂
You’re welcome! Your blog is brilliant 🙂
Hi. Found your blog today and want to try so many of your recipes! But I can’t help wondering where you are finding all of your baking ingredients, like marshmallow creme and packages of powdered sugar. I live in Girona, Spain and I can’t find these items!
¡Hola Christy!
Thanks a lot for your comment 🙂 I’m glad you like my blog!
About your question I find these things at a store called Taste of America. They have stores here in Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, also a tienda online. This the site: http://www.tasteofamerica.es/
Hasta pronto 😉
We just returned from 1 month in Madrid and already booked to go back next year. Re the shop “Taste of America” I like to say, that for anybody who can not ‘live’ without their american brand food – this is the place. The couple who run this shop are very helpful, always cheerful, and a source of valuable information about the neighbourhood (and I am not even American!) – worth visiting. Ciao, Carina
Thanks for your comment Carina 🙂 Yes, is a great place. I have one near home and visit it very often. You probably went to the one in Madrid (city) that is the first store, now we can find many more around the city. But the spirit, product and kindness of the workers are the same. 🙂
this is so great! i will try the broom trick next month! z
It was a fun experiment ;p
🙂
I have nominated you for the Sunshine Award! I love your blog!

If not, no worries- you have a nice shout-out on my blog in any case 🙂 All the best x
Thank you very much, Miss Marzipan! I am thrilled 🙂
I just like to say that the couple who run the “taste of amerika’ shop in Madrid are very helpful, friendly and a first class source of information re the neighbourhood. I am not an American, so I dont miss the branded food, but when we return next year, I most certainly will shop there again. Worth a visit, Ciao, Carina
Thanks Carina! 🙂
You’ve probably reached saturation overload on awards, though I mentioned your hummingbird cake in today’s post about bananas, and you are included in the others for the supersweet award.
Basically it’s a token gesture.
Thanks, I always love spending time on your blog.
Lisa
Oh, thank you! This is great 🙂

A lovely genuine real home is always beautiful. Though no-one has been brave enough to send me a shot of garbage bins, i wish they would!! I am so glad you are playing! c
Well, no garbage bins in my back yard (they are in the front) but a not so tidy up garden is what you can see here 😉
Good, sounds perfect! c
Hi Ms. Jelly Beans! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am a big lover of food too. I love to taste new things. I hope to taste new things here if only living vicariously through your posts. I have a few favorite recipes related to Christmas back home in 3d. And how did you stand up that broom?
Haha! Thank you 🙂 that broom…is a mystery, something to do with the solstice I think. Christie told me about it and it worked! 😉
I’ll look for those Christmas’ recipes, meanwhile I’m enjoying the view of the beach… 🙂
