Anybody remember the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, from 2002? Wow! 10 years already… Well, this Greek girl meets and falls in love with an Irish guy (I think) and she has to introduce him to the family. In one of the scenes they are having dinner and Toula (Nia Vardalos) tells her aunt that her boyfriend, Ian (John Corbett), doesn’t eat meat and this is what happens:
Aunt Voula: What do you mean he don’t eat no meat?
[the entire room stops, in shock]
Aunt Voula: Oh, that’s okay. I make lamb
That is a great movie if you like romantic comedies. Nia Vardalos is very funny and she shows that you don’t need to be a 34-24-34 in. kind of girl to be an actress. And John Corbett, well… he’s not that well-toned neither, but yet very attractive (ask Carrie Bradshaw).
Today I’m posting the salad, for Ian. Tomorrow the lamb, for auntie.
Have a very nice day!
Ingredients
1 onion, cut into strips
½ cucumber, diced
225 g pitted black olives
225 g feta cheese, diced and drained
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves
Parsley for garnish
Dressing
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Salt and pepper
Prepare the dressing in a bowl, mixing oil, vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, cilantro, salt and pepper
Stir in the onion, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, cheese and cilantro. Give it a good shake and garnish with parsley.
Enjoy!
That makes me want to eat hummus and taramasalata 😉
Deleted and edited 😉
Thanks for your comment MD!
I don’t know if I would be able to prepare taramasalata, but it does sound delicious.
The title made me laugh so hard. Very clever!
Hehe 😉 Thanks Anita!

Ha, that was such a great line and this salad looks great too.
Hi Greg!
Thanks for your comment, I’m glad you like it 🙂
I loved that film, it was so funny (reminded me a lot of when I used to go back to the aunties in Italy), so many brillant lines in it. It also reminded me of a holiday I had with 3 girlfriends to Skiathos. There was a little restaurant on the beach and every day we said “we´ll have a light lunch and then a proper lazy dinner…we´ll have a Greek salad and a glass of water”. Of course, we never did…grilled squid, gallons of wine and of course greek salads! It has become a joke over the years when we go out for lunch together that we´ll just order “a Greek salad and a glass of water” but to be honest, if the salad looked as good as this one, I´d definitiely order it. With wine though 😉
Hi Tanya!
Of course… Russo, you have Italian blood. Yes that’s a very funny movie; I guess many of us can relate to these scenes when you marry someone from another country/culture, like us.
I’ll have a glass of wine too, please 😉
Un beso,
Giovanna
This is such a fresh-looking salad, so tasty! As good as it sonds now, it will probably be all the better when out tomatoes are in peak season, come August. Can’t wait!
Hi John!
You are probably right about tomatoes…I guess we are going to make it again then 😉
